"Freedom. And I really feel this way, and I always have. And even if we did get married, it wouldn't make any difference because it's 42 years now,"
"If I'm a bird and you leave the cage door open, I may never fly out. But if you close that door, for my freedom and my independence, I would probably take, like, all my feathers off,"
"It's a freedom of self, it's a freedom of basically, not melding into somebody else."
"Why is that a reason to break up? Why is that a reason to say this isn't working?"
Goldie Hawn credits freedom and personal independence for maintaining her 42-year relationship with Kurt Russell without marriage. Hawn likens open partnership to a bird left free at an open cage door and warns that closing the door would threaten her independence. The couple met in 1966, reconnected on the 1983 film Swing Shift, began dating, and had a son, Wyatt, in 1986. The family includes Russell's son Boston and Hawn's children Oliver and Kate Hudson. Hawn has experienced two prior marriages and prefers a nontraditional partnership while accepting each other's imperfections.
