Oakland adopted the slogan "Love Life" and musician-educator Kev Choice expanded it into an affirmation that emphasizes respect, kindness, grace, truth, understanding, humbleness, and forgiveness. The phrase is frequently read at city events. More than two dozen couples describe Oakland as the main character in their love stories. Couples met while fighting for housing rights, enjoying a summer day at Lake Merritt, reconnecting at a workout class years after high school, or while grabbing drinks with friends. Stories include hopes to build families, blend households, youthful and queer love, and long relationships that endure over time. One couple met at Festival at the Lake in 1995 when a real pager number was unexpectedly shared.
