Drinking more than your partner could be a 'warning sign' for marriage
"Couples who booze together, stay together, according to a new study. Researchers have discovered that the compatibility of a couple's drinking habits is a key predictor of how stable their marriage is. It means that if you regularly enjoy a few glasses of wine with your dinner while your partner sticks to sparkling water, it could spell trouble. And it's especially bad news if the couple consists of a heavy-drinking wife and a light-drinking husband, they warned."
"They were significantly more satisfied in their relationships compared to couples where only one person reported frequent intoxication. 'Marital partners who have similar patterns of alcohol consumption fare better than those with discrepant patterns of consumption,' they said. One of the main studies they referenced was published in 2012 and examined alcohol consumption patterns among couples in New Zealand. Analysis revealed those who reported drinking similar quantities of alcohol - and at similar frequencies - had the happiest marriages."
Compatibility of partners' drinking habits strongly predicts marital satisfaction and stability. Couples who share similar patterns—whether both abstain or both drink regularly—report significantly higher relationship satisfaction than couples with discrepant patterns. Discrepancies in frequency and quantity of alcohol use, and cases where only one partner drinks heavily, are associated with lower marital quality and declines in satisfaction over time. Analyses including a New Zealand sample and longitudinal studies of hundreds of couples show that similar drinking frequency and quantity correlate with the happiest marriages. Mismatched drinking patterns, particularly heavy-drinking wives paired with light-drinking husbands, carry especially negative effects.
