Census Bureau published 2024 data breaking out homeowners association (HOA) and condominium fees for the first time. California's statewide median monthly fee was $278, a value where half pay more and half pay less. County-level medians show sharp variation, with San Francisco at $550, San Mateo $445, Marin $399, Los Angeles $370 and Santa Clara $363. The lowest medians included Butte $113, Fresno $140, San Joaquin $142, Shasta $146 and Placer $148. Los Angeles had the most fee-paying residences (314,655). Orange County has the highest share of owned homes with HOA fees at 46%, followed by San Diego and San Francisco.
