Recent changes in buyer agent commissions, resulting from a National Association of REALTORS® settlement, have not drastically impacted compensation. Nearly one year post-change, average buyer commissions are stable at 2.43%, similar to pre-settlement levels. Initially dropping to 2.36%, commissions have since been rising for three consecutive quarters. The settlement addressed concerns raised by sellers regarding inflated commissions, but increased seller willingness to negotiate in the current market has helped maintain agent compensation levels. The competition is characterized by a higher number of sellers than buyers in several regions.
Studies suggested buyer agent commissions could be cut by as much as half. The Oppenheim Group's Jason Oppenheim said it could amount to "armageddon."
