These NYC neighborhoods see homeowners stay put the longest - and the shortest: study
"The Staten Island neighborhoods mentioned are mostly single-family homes and smaller multifamily homes. Usually, first-time home buyers are attracted to these due to relative affordability, and easy access to Manhattan,"
"Buyers see these homes as transitional; they outgrow them quickly as families expand and tend to move to larger homes, often in New Jersey or on Long Island,"
"'I had one guy who moved here yesterday I talked to. I [asked] why is he moving here? Usually I get the weather but he said, 'one reason only, politics!'"
"Staten Island is much more red and we get many people saying they want to be in the 'free state of Florida.' Much less so then from Manhattan."
Homeowners in New York City sold properties after an average of about 11 years in 2025. Staten Island had the shortest ownership span at about 6.5 years, while the Bronx and Queens recorded the longest stretches near 13 years. Nine of the ten fastest-turnover neighborhoods were in Staten Island, with Grasmere around 4.6 years and Elm Park about 4.7 years. Rapid turnover in Staten Island is linked to predominance of single-family and smaller multifamily homes that attract first-time buyers due to affordability and proximity to Manhattan. Many buyers treat these homes as transitional and later move to larger houses or other states.
