Precarious living at a cliff's edge goes for $100K in Cape Cod
""The couple who bought it knows what they are getting into,""
""They paid $100,000, which is far below the selling price of area properties.""
""When it was first listed, I got hundreds of calls from interested buyers who believed that they'd stumbled onto a steal,""
""One man said that summer rentals in the area are so expensive that, even if it only stands here for a few years, the house would serve as a wonderful family vacation home.""
Two houses on the same Eastham street sold or went under contract for about $100,000 despite severe coastal erosion. A three-bedroom Cape at 153 Brownell Road above Nauset Light Beach moved from 60 feet to 16 feet from the cliff edge in five years and sold in late November. The buyers knowingly paid far less than typical area prices. Interest was high because short-term rental income could offset the risk. Erosion is ongoing across Cape Cod, where private property owners on some shores can add protections but protected National Seashore lands face constraints on mitigation.
