N.J. is finally getting its version of NYC's elevated High Line park
"We are dealing with a priceless resource here,"
"It's so hard to imagine what this will mean to the city, to have a pathway through nature above the city. If you've ever been to the High Line in New York City, you would know a bit of what I'm talking about, but this is going to be even, in many ways, cooler than the High Line,"
"We didn't plant a single tree. We actually didn't spend a single taxpayer dollar on maintaining it and yet this forest up on top of the embankment, it's thriving on its own,"
Jersey City approved a settlement to convert the overgrown Sixth Street Embankment into a nearly mile-long elevated linear park. The city will take ownership of the parkland and proceed with construction while permitting development of more than 600 residential units nearby. Supporters compare the project to Manhattan's High Line and anticipate significant recreational, ecological and aesthetic benefits. Local residents emphasize the embankment's existing self-seeded urban forest, its role in carbon capture, stormwater absorption and cooling, and the potential for a nature pathway above the downtown streets.
