Much-hyped hotel project near Vegas Strip has been canceled
"The Atari Hotel was launched at the worst possible time: in 2020, as the hospitality industry across the globe was shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. That year, the brand, in conjunction with GSD Group and design firm Gensler, announced Atari hotels would be coming to cities across the country. After openings in Las Vegas and Phoenix, hotels were planned for Austin, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle."
"The Vegas hotel was supposed to have 400 rooms on about 5 acres near the Strip. A firm location was never announced, however, and highly stylized renderings only showed the Strat in the near distance behind the hotel. The project leads promised a "video game-themed" getaway with virtual reality experiences and possibly even esports venues. The exterior of the hotel was designed to look like a console so guests could "stay inside an Atari," a 2020 press release said."
"Instead, the Atari Hotel site now focuses on its Phoenix location. The $124 million hotel complex will be located in the Roosevelt Row Arts District and feature 90 rooms, 200 parking spots and an 85,000-square-foot retail space. According to a timeline on the site, construction is expected to begin by the end of the year, with a grand opening planned for Q4 of 2028."
Atari's hotel project launched in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and initially targeted multiple U.S. cities after openings in Las Vegas and Phoenix. A proposed Las Vegas hotel envisioned 400 rooms on about 5 acres with a console-like exterior, virtual reality experiences and possible esports venues, but no firm site was secured. Land negotiations for the Las Vegas project collapsed and the plan stalled. The brand is now concentrating on a $124 million Phoenix development in Roosevelt Row with 90 rooms, 200 parking spaces, 85,000 square feet of retail, construction expected to begin by year-end and a grand opening planned for Q4 2028.
