The business rates appeal system, Check Challenge Appeal (CCA), is approaching a crisis with a massive number of appeals expected over the next seven months. As of now, 162,440 Checks have been registered since April 2023, with 17,330 outstanding. More than half of the 35,910 Challenges remain unresolved. This situation is particularly pressing for businesses in the retail, hospitality, and leisure sectors, which are now reconsidering their rateable values due to economic challenges and cut reliefs. Many businesses will soon start registering their appeals as the deadline nears.
In the 27 months since the beginning of the 2023 list, 162,440 Checks were registered in England, with 17,330 still outstanding.
Of the 35,910 Challenges that progressed to the second stage, over half were still outstanding nine months before the end of the list.
The majority of businesses have held back from appeals due to the detailed information required. They will now flood the system as the deadline approaches.
Many in retail, hospitality, and leisure sectors are now disputing current rateable values as economic conditions worsen and reliefs diminish.
