Hundreds of flats get green light in latest phase of 20,000 home 'new town' on Thames
"A planning statement on behalf of developer L&Q explained the flats would form a "high-quality" development with a "high standard of residential accommodation"."
"John Cutler of L&Q told the commitee that this would make up a "valuable affordable housing offer"."
"Mr Khan said: Barking Riverside is a prime example of a new town in London, a pioneering partnership delivering thousands of new homes for Londoners. It's an inspiring model of how to fix our housing crisis, with new public transport connections, schools, green spaces and a town centre making this a blueprint for how the next generation of English new towns could work."
Councillors approved 651 new homes across twelve blocks on River Road, Barking, as part of the wider Barking Riverside redevelopment. The homes comprise 207 one-bed, 281 two-bed and 163 three-bed units. Thirty percent of the new homes will be social housing and 28% will be let at London Living Rent levels. Developer L&Q described the scheme as a "high-quality" development offering a "high standard of residential accommodation" and a "valuable affordable housing offer". A planning officer said original outline plans did not require four-bed homes. The overall project aims to deliver up to 20,000 homes; outline plans were approved in 2018 and reserved matters are being confirmed phase by phase.
