Hawaii unveils bold plans for new visitor destination
"As part of the redevelopment, several oceanfront acres have been set aside for cultural use, with an amphitheater slated to host the brand-new "Kaula Luau," produced and choreographed by Native Hawaiian leadership. It's scheduled to debut in mid-February. "What we are building with Ko Olina is far more than a set of programs. It is a cultural foundation that restores dignity to our traditions, opens doors for our people and ensures that Hawaiian stories are told by Hawaiian voices,""
"Lewis said the storytelling method of "Kaula Luau" will differentiate it from other luau. "Kaula Luau is a fully realized theatrical production that tells the genealogy of Mahina, a young Native Hawaiian woman, through stories passed down by her grandmother," Lewis told SFGATE in an email. "Unlike traditional luaus that focus primarily on individual performances, Kaula is a cohesive narrative experience.""
Paradise Cove Luau at Ko Olina will close on New Year's Eve as James Campbell Co. redevelops the site into a mixed-use gathering place called the Cove with restaurants, retail and entertainment. Duke's Restaurants plans to open a location at the Cove in 2028. Several oceanfront acres are reserved for cultural use, including an amphitheater that will host the new Kaula Luau produced and choreographed by Native Hawaiian leadership, debuting in mid-February. The Hawaiian Council frames the project as a cultural foundation restoring dignity to traditions and ensuring Hawaiian stories are told by Hawaiian voices while engaging local talent, vendors and practitioners.
