Greenwich's Art Deco town hall 'to become flats'
Briefly

Greenwich Council has approved plans to convert the former Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich headquarters, Meridian House, into housing. The repurposing includes 73 residential units, with 11 classified as affordable, accommodating singles to families. The project aims to enhance the area’s vibrancy, featuring flexible commercial spaces. The clock tower's observation deck will be refurbished for public access once a year. Meridian House, unoccupied since 2019, lies next to Borough Hall, which has historical significance as a concert venue.
The distinctive brick building with its prominent 184ft (56m) tower, now called Meridian House, served as the borough's home until it was merged with Woolwich in 1965.
Of the planned 73 build-to-rent residential units, 11 of them would be affordable, split between one-bed and two-bed apartments, catering to various occupants.
The new homes are designed to meet local needs, offering flexible commercial spaces for workspace, community facilities or retail, enhancing the surrounding area.
The clock tower's observation deck, inaccessible for over 50 years, will be revamped and reopened to the public at least once a year.
