Eviction of Disabled Veteran Halted After Intervention From Neighbors and a City Councilor
"I was blind for two and a half years. This is the first time I've seen anything."
"I had people read for me. My surgeries ain't done and they wanna throw me out on the streets. Said I owed money."
"We just started making phone calls and sending emails."
"Until very recently, Dan has been functionally blind for an extended period due to cataracts. The leasing office staff were made aware of this fact well in advance of filing for eviction, but never took the necessary steps"
Dan McLean, a 68-year-old veteran with serious health issues and recent vision-restoring laser surgeries, received an eviction notice ordering him to leave his affordable apartment by Tuesday. McLean participates in the HUD VASH program, which previously covered his full rent; at some point the voucher stopped covering the full amount and McLean was not notified of the shortfall. Neighbors who run a tenant union at The Yards contacted Pinehurst Management and District 4 City Councilor Mitch Green's office to intervene. A letter to management documents that leasing staff knew of McLean's extended blindness yet failed to take necessary steps before filing for eviction. McLean will remain in his apartment.
