Castro Coffee Co. and Nail Salon Will Both Relocate as Castro Theatre Prepares to Reopen
"There was some consternation in the Castro neighborhood last year following news that two well loved small businesses, Castro Coffee Co. and Castro Nail Salon, whose storefronts are at the right and left sides of the Castro Theatre entrance, were being evicted. Another Planet Entertainment, which now holds the master lease for the building, said that it will need the storefronts for back-office and box-office functions for the theater after it reopens, and both businesses were set to lose their leases last June."
"They are, indeed, still going to be vacating those spaces, but district Supervisor Rafael Mandelman tells the Bay Area Reporter this week that he and the city are working to help them potentially relocate. "I think our hope is each of them will be able to stay in the neighborhood. That is one solution we are going to try to help them with," Mandelman tells the publication."
Castro Coffee Co. and Castro Nail Salon must vacate the storefronts at the right and left sides of the Castro Theatre entrance after the building's master leaseholder requires the spaces for back-office and box-office functions. Both businesses were set to lose their leases last June and remain scheduled to vacate, but city officials, including Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, are working to help them relocate within the neighborhood. Brothers Ken and Riyad Khoury own the coffeeshop and nail salon; both have reportedly secured nearby replacement spaces, with the coffeeshop moving to 421 Castro and the salon to the 500 block. The theatre owners expressed appreciation to city leaders for assistance.
