"That decision came as a surprise - not just to us, but to the landlord as well, who has been supportive of keeping the space as a grocery use," Canepa wrote. Whole Foods still holds the lease for "several" more years, the Marin Independent Journal reported Tuesday."
"According to Canepa's Nov. 3 post, Whole Foods approached him "about a month ago" to see if he'd be interested. His team was excited about the idea of a second location, and everything seemed to be heading in the right direction. They toured the building, discussed logistics and were told that "everyone," including the building's landlord, "felt comfortable" with Mill Valley Market as the new tenant, he wrote."
Amazon closed the Mill Valley Whole Foods in late September, prompting community concern about the lost grocery. Mill Valley Market, a 96-year-old family-owned store, negotiated to take over the lease at 414 Miller Ave. Whole Foods initially approached Mill Valley Market and discussions included building tours and logistics, with the landlord reportedly comfortable with a grocery tenant. Whole Foods then changed course and sought a non-grocery tenant while still holding the lease for several more years. Mill Valley Market expressed willingness to wait out the lease but prefers to restore a walkable, community-oriented grocery sooner.
