Average size of UK flats has decreased in last decade, data shows

Over the past decade, the average floor area of homes in England has shown a notable trend. While flats have shrunk by 1.7 percent, the average floor area of terraced homes, bungalows, and semi-detached properties has experienced growth. According to data from Nationwide Building Society's analysis of the English Housing Survey, the overall average floor area of properties increased from 95.3 square metres in 2013 to 96.2 square metres in 2023. Terraced houses notably saw a 3.6 percent increase in size during this period, while the flat sizes have decreased to an average of 60.3 square metres.
