The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is implementing significant changes in its refereeing structure, evidenced by the dismissal of VAR head Carlos Clos Gómez and Technical Committee of Referees head Luis Medina Cantalejo. This move comes amid increasing scrutiny and complaints from clubs, particularly Real Madrid, regarding refereeing decisions. The RFEF aims to create a more modern, efficient refereeing model as part of its reform efforts involving dialogue with various stakeholders in Spanish football. The new structure for the Technical Committee of Referees will be announced on July 2.
The RFEF thanked Medina Cantalejo and Clos Gómez for their "professionalism and commitment," emphasizing the need for a modern, efficient refereeing model.
RFEF president Rafael Louzan revealed earlier this year that refereeing in Spain was set to undergo structural change, driven by persistent complaints from multiple clubs.
