Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro confirmed a gentleman's agreement with manager Xabi Alonso, permitting him to leave if approached by former clubs. Since joining Leverkusen, Alonso has achieved significant success, including an unbeaten Bundesliga title in 2023-24. Despite interest from top clubs like Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Real Madrid last year, Alonso opted to remain with Leverkusen, which he is contracted to until 2026. Carro emphasized their positive relationship with Madrid and acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Carlo Ancelottiâs future at the Bernabeu.
We have a gentleman's agreement that if any of the teams he has played for calls, we would sit down and talk, and we wouldn't put any obstacles in his way.
Last year Xabi had offers from important clubs, but he assured us that he would stay with us. Maybe it is a bit early to talk as the season is still ongoing.
