Wish Book: Drowning is the leading cause of death for autistic children. The YMCA hopes to expand a water safety program that's changing the dynamic.
"It was a raging creek - I mean, he was gone,"
"I jumped in there and was just slashing arms everywhere. I was able to grab him. I got kind of bashed up by the rocks, but I pulled him out. He's just head-to-toe drenched. I'm drenched, and slapping water out of him as he's coughing. That was scary. I mean, it was a few seconds, but it felt like minutes."
A 4-year-old boy named Lucas, diagnosed with autism, nearly drowned after stepping into deceptively shallow water near Stevens Creek Dam while his father looked away to take a photo. The father, Jason Foreman, jumped into the raging creek and rescued Lucas despite being bashed by rocks; both were drenched and coughing. Foreman sought local swim lessons and found adaptive options scarce, distant, and expensive. Foreman approached YMCA of Silicon Valley to adapt the Safety Around Water program for autistic children. The Autism Society reports drowning causes 91% of deaths among children with autism, highlighting urgent need for accessible programs.
