Several thousand influenza samples normally arrive annually at the U.S. CDC from patients worldwide, but shipments have fallen sharply this year. From February through July, CDC received 427 samples, a 60% decrease from the same period the previous year, and only 12 countries had sent samples, down 65% compared with 2024. Shipments to the WHO collaborating centers network are also reduced, impairing global analysis of viral evolution. The U.S. withdrawal from WHO on January 20 created a roughly billion-dollar budget shortfall and reduced funds for sample shipments. WHO is seeking alternative funding. Reduced sample flow hinders vaccine strain selection and risks less effective vaccines.
