The announcement comes about a week after two cases were confirmed in West Bengal state in eastern India, as authorities work to contain the deadly virus that they say remains largely under control."
A patient in Naogaon district, Bangladesh, aged between 40 and 50, died after contracting Nipah virus; symptoms began on January 21 and hospitalization occurred on January 28. Throat swabs and blood samples were collected and laboratory confirmation occurred the following day. On 3 February 2026, Bangladesh notified WHO of one confirmed case in Rajshahi Division. The patient reported no travel history but had recently consumed raw date palm sap. Thirty-five contacts were tested with no further cases detected. Two recent cases were confirmed in West Bengal, India. WHO assesses national, regional, and global public health risk as low and does not recommend travel or trade restrictions.
