West Coast states break from CDC, issue independent vaccine guidelines
"In the face of federal leadership that has completely failed us, the West Coast is taking action,"
"I'm confident that the individuals that are part of this West Coast Health Alliance are looking at all of that data so that they can give the best recommendations,"
"The vaccine is safe and effective, so getting the vaccine can help protect from those symptoms,"
California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii formed the West Coast Alliance to issue joint vaccine guidance ahead of the winter respiratory season. The alliance acted after the removal of all 17 members of the CDC's vaccine advisory committee and expressed distrust of federal recommendations. The guidance recommends COVID-19 vaccination for children 6 months to 23 months, people aged 2 to 64 with risk factors, and all pregnant, lactating, postpartum, or planning-to-be-pregnant women. The alliance guidance departs from CDC rules that require healthcare provider consultation for healthy adults 65 and younger and parental sign-off for healthy children.
