"We have one of the worst systems in terms of making housing available to the poorest. We are looking at homelessness being related to health factors - trauma, depression, anxiety. And we've increasing levels of poverty."
"show how homeless people continue to be deeply failed"
"accelerating efforts to tackle the root causes of homelessness"
A record 1,611 homeless people died in the UK in 2024, a 9% rise on the previous year. Most deaths were linked to suicide or drugs, with spice and nitazines increasingly implicated. The Museum of Homelessness compiles figures using coroner's courts, media reports, family testimony and Freedom of Information requests. The government no longer publishes official homeless death data. Individual cases include Anthony Marks, assaulted near King's Cross and later dying after a seizure; four people have been charged. Homelessness charities connect rising deaths to inadequate housing, trauma, mental ill-health and growing poverty; local incidents include three deaths in Sheffield, one burial with no attendees.
