The Trump administration urged pregnant women to avoid acetaminophen, advising them to "tough it out" and urging they "fight like hell not to take it." Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is aligned with suggestions that environmental factors may cause autism. Scientific and medical groups reject the claimed link between acetaminophen and autism as unsupported by research. Colin Killick of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network said such messaging treats autism as if its "existence is some sort of plague" and increases stigma and parental guilt. Proposed Medicaid spending cuts could reduce essential supports for autistic people who disproportionately rely on Medicaid for long-term care.
