The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a required label change for acetaminophen products to warn of a possible link to autism when used during pregnancy. California health officials, the state surgeon general's office and the Department of Developmental Services maintain that pregnancy guidance has not changed and emphasize decades of evidence showing autism arises from complex genetic and environmental causes with no proof linking prenatal acetaminophen to autism. Large-scale studies and experts report that associations observed in some research reflect correlation rather than causation. Epidemiologist Brian Lee stated that the best science indicates prenatal acetaminophen does not cause autism.
