Three individuals from the Countess of Chester Hospital have been arrested under suspicion of gross negligent manslaughter related to events during 2015 and 2016. They are now on bail as investigations continue into corporate manslaughter at the hospital. The inquiry will focus on the actions or inactions that may relate to the higher rates of fatalities. The investigation into the deaths and collapses in neonatal units at the Countess of Chester and Liverpool Women's Hospitals spans from 2012 to 2016, and is ongoing without set timelines.
The investigation will determine whether any criminality has taken place concerning the response to the increased levels of fatalities.
Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes stated that the gross negligent manslaughter will focus on the action or inaction of individuals.
Both the corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter elements of the investigation are continuing and there are no set timescales for these.
Hughes insisted it is important to note this latest development does not impact on the convictions of Lucy Letby for multiple offences of murder and attempted murder.
