"Medical staff is continuing to monitor the detainees' conditions and will take appropriate and active steps to prevent further infection,"
"All detainees are being provided with proper medical care."
"They're not being told anything, and they are not being offered any sort of protective measures,"
"And it's important to point out that this is not just a detention conditions issue - it's a public health issue generally."
Measles has afflicted humans for over a millennium, with physicians documenting cases as early as 10th-century Persia. The first measles vaccine, developed by John Enders in 1963, virtually eradicated the virus from the US by 2000. Two detainees at the federal immigration family detention center in Dilley, Texas tested positive for measles. Officials quarantined anyone who had contact with the individuals and limited movement while medical staff monitor detainees and provide care. An attorney representing a family at the facility reports detainees were not informed, vaccination statuses were not checked, and protective measures were not offered, creating broader public-health concerns.
