The U.S. is 'really at risk,' says former CDC official on vaccine disputes and agency departures

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. removed CDC director Susan Monarez after less than one month in the role. HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill is expected to become interim CDC director, though the White House had not officially announced the change. Several top CDC leaders resigned in protest of Monarez's ouster. Monarez's lawyers say she was forced out for refusing to "refused to rubber stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts." Former CDC leader Anne Schuchat warned that the absence of experienced leaders and ideological decision-making around vaccine safety endangers access and public health.
What we're seeing now is an ideological decision about what the answer should be and then a backfill of individuals on the advisory committee and working groups, and so forth, to get to that decision about what we want the answer to be, on a question of vaccine safety, and then let's manipulate the data to get there,
