The Church's Pastor Gets Diagnosed with AIDS. And the Church Wonders How Much They Might Lose.
"In 1995 Rev. Jim Mitulski became HIV positive - what's known as seroconversion. It was 14 years into the epidemic and people knew what HIV/AIDS was, how you got it, and how you could prevent it. And when Jim got sick, he got very sick. What was it like to become ill so publicly? How would the church and the community respond? And what could Jim possibly preach about on his first Sunday back?"
"When We All Get to Heaven is produced by Eureka Street Productions. It is co-created by Lynne Gerber, Siri Colom, and Ariana Nedelman. Our story editor is Sayre Quevedo. In 1995 Rev. Jim Mitulski became HIV positive (seroconversion), fourteen years into the epidemic when public knowledge about HIV/AIDS, transmission, and prevention was widespread. Jim became very ill and his illness unfolded publicly, raising questions about how the church and surrounding community would respond and what message he could offer when he returned to preach. Musical elements include Camille Saint-Saëns' "My Soul Doth Magnify" and Bobby McFerrin's "The 23rd Psalm (Dedicated to My Mother)." The narrative references the biblical account of Elijah's death (2 Kings 2) and includes production credits, funding sources, archival music from MCC-SF, and expert thanks regarding HIV status and sero-sorting.
