Support group for mums from different ethnicities
Briefly

A new weekly group named Mothers of Colour will launch in Cheltenham to support mothers from different ethnic backgrounds. Carolyn Nansubuga, who struggled to connect with traditional groups, emphasized the importance of cultural understanding in motherhood. The initiative, in partnership with the NHS, will cover topics such as newborn care and maternal health. An audit highlighted the alarming disparity in maternal death rates among black women compared to white women, underscoring the need for tailored support. Nansubuga expressed excitement over the opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences.
"Groups are meant to give you rest from the mundane things of motherhood you've been going through at home so, when you go there, you have to feel welcome."
"It's nice to go into a space where you can just be."
National audit programme 'Mothers and Babies: Reducing Risk through Audits, External' (MBRRACE-UK) found maternal deaths among black women were nearly three times higher compared with those of white women in 2020-22.
When I heard about this group starting up I was super excited because, finally, we have the chance to attend a baby group and be ourselves.
