Step up measles vaccinations, say doctors as outbreaks accelerate in 2 provinces | CBC News
Briefly

As measles outbreaks intensify in Ontario and Alberta, public health experts are urging officials to amplify vaccination campaigns and improve messaging. Recent reports indicate a surge in cases, including 223 new infections in Ontario and 210 confirmed cases in Alberta. This increase has resulted in hospitalizations, notably among children. Experts highlight the danger of the measles virus, which spreads easily among unvaccinated individuals, stressing the need for community vaccination rates to reach 95% to avert outbreaks. Misinformation and pandemic disruptions have severely impacted vaccination efforts.
That's the largest single week increase since the outbreak began in October of 2024. A lot of important developments in the last week, unfortunately.
Public health authorities aim for 95 percent of people in a community to be protected from measles to prevent outbreaks. But vaccination rates are nowhere near that in many places.
I think there has been a complete failure in public health messaging surrounding vaccinations. The vaccine misinformation online has compounded the issue significantly.
Measles is a very infectious disease, it can spread rapidly among those who have not been vaccinated, even if most people in a community are immunized.
