Social Democrats appeal for Taoiseach to intervene on Dail hunger strikers on their 45th day
"I have written to the Taoiseach on behalf of the parliamentary party to express our deep alarm and outrage at the lack of progress by the government in resolving this issue."
"Given that these individuals have now gone without food for such a long time, every single day is crucial to their health - there is simply no time to lose, she said."
"These survivors deserve a clear acknowledgment of the State's failings, a Health Amendment Act (HAA) card and a contributory pension in recognition of what happened to them in their childhood - and the consequences it had for the rest of their lives."
"The government must ensure there is a compassionate, coordinated response to their asks without further delay, she added."
Deputy Jen Cummins called for health supports and a State contributory pension for people who suffered residential abuse and for urgent government intervention. Four protestors have been on hunger strike for 45 days seeking Health Amendment Act (HAA) cards and contributory pensions to address long-term consequences of childhood abuse. Cummins wrote to the Taoiseach expressing alarm at the lack of progress and urged a personal meeting with survivors and representatives. A planned meeting was postponed, raising health concerns. Survivors previously met Catherine Connolly, and a package of health supports agreed by the previous Government is due to be rolled out shortly.
