Santa Clara County nurse navigators triage non-emergency calls - San Jose Spotlight
"(The program) preserves those highly trained professionals and those pieces of equipment that are really specialized for cardiac arrest, chest pains - for the people who really, truly have an emergency,"
"(It) also offers an avenue for folks who don't necessarily have a high level of emergency, but still need help."
"H.R.1, President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill.""
Santa Clara County implemented a nurse navigator pilot in 2024 to triage non-emergency 911 calls in South County and the West Valley to a nurse call center. Nurses assess callers, provide phone advice, book clinic appointments, or arrange hospital rides. The service expanded countywide at no additional cost through a partnership with Global Medical Response and remains free for callers. From November 2024 to August 2025, nearly 200 calls were transferred, with nurse navigators handling 166 and three requiring emergency transport; 31 callers declined. Officials estimate more than $400,000 saved. The program aims to reduce emergency department strain amid Medi-Cal funding cuts.
