President Donald Trump's administration has once again sought to roll back mercury regulations, a move previously contested by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in 2017. At that time, Kennedy vocally opposed the EPA's compliance with Trump's repeal of wastewater limits, warning that increased mercury pollution in waterways would impact public health through contaminated fish. Despite his history of activism against mercury pollution, Kennedy has not commented on the current regulatory rollbacks following his confirmation as head of Health and Human Services. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin characterized these changes as the largest deregulatory effort in U.S. history.
"It is really troublesome for those of us who will suffer from your irresponsibility. The law says the waterways of this country, the fisheries of this country, belong to the people."
"The same chemicals that kill fish make people sick," Kennedy said at the January hearing.
