Public to help shape plans for 'crumbling' hospital
"marks an important step on our journey to finally deliver the urgently needed new St Mary's"
"We want as many patients, staff and local people as possible to help shape our masterplan for the redevelopment of the site."
"Imperial described the buildings as "crumbling", and a new St Mary's Hospital had become "increasingly urgent" to ensure that services and patients were not put at risk."
St Mary's Hospital's main outpatient building will close at the end of March after reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was discovered. Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has launched a public consultation to inform the first stage of a masterplan and is inviting patients, staff and local people to provide feedback. Parts of the hospital date from 1845 and several buildings are described as crumbling, creating an urgent need for replacement to protect services and patients. Significant foundation issues affected another clinical and education building, while site inspections revealed rusty pipes, patched flooring and leaks. The hospitals were placed in the final tranche of the Government's New Hospital Programme, so redevelopment works are not expected to start for about a decade and are unlikely to finish before the 2040s.
