"In total, there were an estimated 1,431 new HIV infections in New York City in 2024, with a disproportionate impact on men who have sex with men, Black people, Latino people, and individuals living in areas with high poverty, according to the report. Meanwhile, there were 1,791 new HIV diagnoses - not to be confused with new infections."
"Two-thirds of people newly diagnosed with HIV in the city last year were between the ages of 20 and 39, while 16% were age 50 or older. Among those individuals, 44% were Black and 41% were Latino, 75% were men, 20% were women, 4% were transgender women, and less than 1% were trans men. Notably, men who have sex with men made up 65% of people newly diagnosed with HIV whose transmission data were available."
New HIV infections in New York City increased 17% in 2024 and new diagnoses rose 5% across the five boroughs. Estimated new infections numbered 1,431 and new diagnoses numbered 1,791. The epidemic disproportionately affected men who have sex with men, Black and Latino people, and residents of high-poverty neighborhoods. Two-thirds of newly diagnosed people were ages 20–39; 16% were 50 or older. About 85,800 people in the city have diagnosed HIV and roughly 5,500 have undiagnosed HIV. Overall progress since 2001 reduced diagnoses by over 70%, but recent years show stalled or rising cases and persistent inequities.
