Pharmacy Adds Vaccinations for Infants, First in the South Bay
""We've heard from a lot of parents who get their care in other health systems that their regular doctor just isn't offering COVID shots for infants this year because of administrative hurdles or costs to the practice. But babies do need their shots, and they need their shots on time, and I'm so proud of our pharmacists for completing the extra training to make it possible.""
""We were really pleased to teach them how to do this, so that all of us at the County together can reach even more families. They were taught by the best, so they provide a really high quality service over there at Lenzen.""
""Our team recognized a need and stepped up to help,""
County Public Health pharmacists at the Lenzen Avenue safety net pharmacy in San Jose now vaccinate infants and toddlers ages 6 months to 2 years, the first pharmacy in Santa Clara County to offer infant vaccinations. The Lenzen site previously vaccinated only people ages 3 and older. Six county pharmacists completed advanced pediatric training from Santa Clara Valley Healthcare pediatrics nurses covering patient assessment, parent education, and vaccine administration. The pharmacists operate under the Health Officer's authority because vaccinating children under age 3 in California requires special oversight. The expansion aims to address access gaps caused by administrative hurdles and costs in other practices.
