Over 50 latent tuberculosis cases detected at SF high school amid outbreak
"San Francisco health officials sent out an advisory on Thursday after dozens of people at a high school were found to have the latent form of tuberculosis, or TB. The San Francisco Department of Public Health's advisory alerted health care providers to the outbreak centered at Archbishop Riordan High School and warned them to look for signs of TB infection in people affiliated with the school."
"TB can be either active or latent. When active, TB causes symptoms and can lead to infection in others. When it's latent, the disease does not develop symptoms and isn't transmissible to others. Latent TB can turn into active TB at any time. The first positive test for active TB at the school was reported in November. In addition to ongoing testing, authorities have ordered anyone with the active disease to remain at home."
San Francisco health officials reported an outbreak of latent tuberculosis centered at Archbishop Riordan High School, with over 50 people testing positive for latent TB and three people developing active TB. The first active case was reported in November. Authorities ordered those with active disease to remain home and began testing every eight weeks until the outbreak is over. The school will close to in-person classes, use remote lessons until Feb. 9, then hybrid through Feb. 20, and will admit only students and staff who test negative afterward. The San Francisco Department of Public Health states the risk to the general population is low.
