NYC senior care provider loses federal funding over its programs that help immigrants feel at home
Briefly

Vasundhara Kalasapudi, a psychiatrist and executive director of India Home, created a nonprofit to serve South Asian and Indo-Caribbean seniors after struggling to find culturally appropriate care for her father. Despite its significant impact, India Home lost $1 million in federal funding due to an executive order aimed at reducing programs focused on race or cultural sensitivity. The organization provides services in respect of dietary habits and linguistic diversity, currently supporting over 1,000 members through five centers, with high demand for additional housing units.
"They said, 'Dr. K, we know what you are looking for, but, you know, we don't have any curry-serving facilities,'" she recalled.
"We cannot say we are not culturally sensitive. We will continue to serve halal and vegetarian meals, and run our regular activities because we are committed to our core mission," Kalasapudi said.
