Norway announces ban on sale of energy drinks to youngsters
Briefly

Norway will prohibit the sale of energy drinks to anyone under 16 from January 1. Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre warned that excessive consumption causes restlessness, sleep problems, difficulty concentrating and can damage the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. The government conducted a consultation that received broad professional support, including from the Directorate of Health. Norway's national medical and dental associations called for a higher age limit of under 18 and expressed disappointment that the advice was not followed. The government described the 16-year limit as a compromise, stating that 16-year-olds can make informed, good choices.
"Excessive consumption of energy drinks leads to restlessness, sleep problems and difficulty concentrating. It can also cause damage to the cardiovascular and central nervous systems,"
"It is disappointing that the government chose to ignore clear professional advice and go for a 16-year age limit."
"We had expected a more ambitious public health policy from the government, which puts the health of children and young people first, and in line with the precautionary principle,"
"16-year-olds are mature enough to be able to make informed and good choices. That is why we have set the limit at 16 years."
