Rapid urbanization, sedentary lifestyles, fried foods, and sugary diets are driving a surge in diabetes across Nigeria. Type 1 cases are increasing sharply, and low awareness combined with limited screening leaves many young people undiagnosed. An estimated 11.4 million people in Nigeria live with diabetes, one of the highest totals in Sub-Saharan Africa. Many patients lack access to affordable test kits and insulin, contributing to severe complications and poor healing after injuries. Calls for early screening, public education, affordable supplies, and emergency-level responses reflect the growing public-health threat.
