The hospital waiting list in England decreased to 7.29 million patients by the end of December 2025, the lowest level since February 2023. Emergency departments continued to experience prolonged waits, with more than 71,500 patients spending over 12 hours on trolleys in January 2026, the highest figure since tracking began in 2010. Nearly one in five patients admitted via A&E waited longer than 12 hours for a ward bed. Overall performance against the 18-week treatment target fell slightly to 61.5% from 61.8%, while the government target remains 92% by 2029. Progress occurred alongside staffing pressures and resident doctor strikes.
