"caused an estimated 670,000 deaths globally in 2022,"
"Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in women despite mammography screening,"
"The explanation is that mammography still fails to detect many cases of breast cancer, or is not detecting them early enough,"
"With this newly-developed AI model, we can predict with much greater precision that a woman will develop breast cancer in the next five years on the basis of mammograms that are normal and show no signs of breast cancer."
Breast cancer affects about 2.3 million new patients worldwide each year. The disease caused an estimated 670,000 deaths globally in 2022. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women despite mammography screening. Mammography often misses cases or fails to detect tumors early, especially fast-growing aggressive tumors that cause many deaths. A new AI algorithm can predict a woman's five-year breast cancer risk from normal mammogram images alone. In study results, women flagged as high risk were four times more likely to develop breast cancer than those with low scores. Routine screening in Germany offers mammograms every two years for women aged 50 to 75, while individual risk varies widely.
