More than 40,000 unionized Kaiser Permanente workers in four states walked off their jobs to begin a five-day strike. Nearly 3,000 workers are striking in Northern California. The unions are seeking higher pay and increased staffing to alleviate worker burnout and improve patient care. A certified nurse-midwife, Emily Hardy, said the workers prefer to be caring for patients but see the strike as the only viable path forward, accusing Kaiser of refusing reasonable solutions. Kaiser Permanente called the strike unnecessary and offered to raise wages by more than 21% over four years. The strike is scheduled to end at 7 a.m. Sunday.
