Measles outbreak: how contagious is it and what are the symptoms?
Briefly

A recent measles outbreak in Texas, affecting primarily unvaccinated children, has seen 146 reported cases and one death, marking a worrying trend as vaccination rates decline. Health experts predict that this outbreak is part of a larger resurgence of measles cases linked to falling vaccination rates. The CDC's definition of an outbreak has been met, raising alarms about public health as the U.S. grapples with the potential return of widespread measles, with experts foreseeing even worse conditions in upcoming years if vaccination rates don’t improve.
According to the Texas department of state health services, as of 28 February, 146 people have contracted measles, primarily unvaccinated children, resulting in one death.
Dr. Adam Ratner emphasizes that this outbreak is significantly sized, indicating a marked increase in measles cases due to declining vaccination rates.
Dr. Peter Hotez warns that these case numbers are just the tip of the iceberg, potentially setting the stage for a significant increase in outbreaks in 2025.
The CDC defines an outbreak as three or more related cases, and last year, the US saw 285 measles cases across 31 states and Washington, D.C.
