Major e-bike warning issued across London ahead of Black Friday
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"The London Fire Brigade (LFB) issued a warning ahead of Black Friday after a record number of fires were caused by an e-bike or e-scooter so far this year. LFB is urging consumers to be careful when buying these products from online marketplaces on the huge shopping discount day and to be aware of the dangers. Incompatible lithium-ion batteries or faulty conversion kits in e-bikes and e-scooters can cause fires, which spread quickly and create toxic smoke with catastrophic consequences."
The Independent covers topics including reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech, and produces work such as the documentary 'The A Word' focusing on American women fighting for reproductive rights. The Independent says it remains free to readers and seeks donations to fund reporters on the ground and investigative work. The London Fire Brigade warned of a record number of fires linked to e-bikes and e-scooters and urged caution when buying on online marketplaces during Black Friday. Incompatible lithium-ion batteries or faulty conversion kits can cause rapidly spreading fires and toxic smoke. Firefighters reported 18 battery-caused fires per month in 2025 so far, predict 200 by year end, and note five deaths since 2023, including two this year; victims did not always own the failing e-bike. Short-term savings on cheap or incompatible products can lead to far greater long-term costs and risks.
