Luke O'Neill: Should we be concerned about catching bird flu?
"People can get the virus, but it's rare and occurs only in those with weak immune systems"
"A virus is back in the news. This time it's not one that infects humans, but instead infects birds, causing bird flu. Outbreaks have been reported on turkey farms in Co Carlow and in Kells, Co Meath."
"Because of the outbreak, from Monday all poultry must be housed. This is to help prevent the spread of the virus because poultry can infect wild birds who will spread it further."
Bird flu has caused outbreaks on turkey farms in Co Carlow and Kells, Co Meath, and followed an outbreak at Fota Wildlife Park, Co Cork, which remains closed to the public. Two suspected cases exist on poultry farms in Co Tyrone and Co Fermanagh. Human infection is possible but rare and primarily occurs in individuals with weakened immune systems. From Monday all poultry must be housed to reduce contact with wild birds and limit onward spread of the virus. Housing poultry is intended to interrupt transmission pathways between domestic and wild birds.
