"despite successful targeted investments in other countries, we have not implemented similar strategies, and thus lag behind in both prevention strategies for baby deaths and in public health education concerning pregnancy and infant loss"
"We don't record or acknowledge miscarriages nor provide access to specialised clinics and services for all. Preventive measures such as improved antenatal care, safer sleep campaigns, and early identification of risks are low-cost, evidence-based, and already proven in some countries to reduce baby deaths. Together, and with political will, there is much we can do to enhance services, supports and end preventable baby deaths"
"agenda is guided by research findings from the leading national research group in this area, the Pregnancy Loss Research Group (PLRG) from University College Cork"
One in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage, about 3.9 times more common than breast cancer diagnoses. More babies are born stillborn than people die on roads. Ireland has not implemented targeted investments and strategies used elsewhere, leaving gaps in prevention and public health education around pregnancy and infant loss. Recording and acknowledgement of miscarriages is inconsistent and access to specialised clinics and services is limited. Preventive measures such as improved antenatal care, safer sleep campaigns, and early identification of risks are low-cost, evidence-based, and proven elsewhere to reduce baby deaths. A cross-party parliamentary group, guided by the Pregnancy Loss Research Group, prioritises standardised miscarriage care and ending preventable baby deaths.
