An outbreak of legionnaires' disease in London, Ontario, has resulted in one death and over 40 illnesses, primarily among individuals living or working within a six-kilometre area. The Middlesex-London Health Unit is investigating the source, conducting environmental sampling of potential legionella sources, including cooling systems. This is the second outbreak of legionnaires' disease in London, which previously had an outbreak last summer that resulted in two deaths and 30 reported infections. The links between the current and previous outbreak are under investigation.
Legionnaires' disease is caused by legionella bacteria, found in water sources like hot tubs, cooling towers, and air-conditioning systems. It is not transmitted person to person.
